‘Tighten screws on perpetrators of child marriages’

THE Zimbabwe National Junior Council Association has called on government to do more to end child marriages.

The association’s president Shingirirai Chikazhe told NewsDay at the end of their three-day conference in Chinhoyi on Thursday that one of the resolutions was to continue lobbying government to tighten screws on perpetrators of child marriages.

Chikazhe said it was “inhuman” for older men to marry young girls as it often resulted in health complications and psychological trauma.

“It is not only legally wrong.

It is inhuman to turn girls into brides, they are the future and leaders of tomorrow,” Chikazhe said.

Another girl child, Tatenda Phiri, challenged national leaders and policymakers to lead by example and co-operate in campaigning against child marriages.

“Laws and policies are not enough. Even the sentences passed by the courts are not deterrent enough hence the continued rise of such cases,” Phiri said.

Members of the association later marched in Chinhoyi to register their displeasure at the increase in cases of child marriages.

Addressing the junior councillors after the march, Chinhoyi mayor Test Michaels said national and community leaders played a major role in protecting young girls from male predators and criminals.

The conference was being held under the theme Promoting ZimAsset to Capacitate the Youth and Children at Local Government.
